Specialized Wilderness Therapy for the New Generation of Addictions
Life-Changing Treatment for Teens
The first of its kind nationally, STAR Guides offers wilderness therapy uniquely designed for adolescent boys and girls struggling with process and digital addictions.
These addictions result in stagnated emotional development which interfere with establishing healthy relationships. STAR Guides navigates teens beyond these addictions by generating unprecedented emotional growth through specialized wilderness treatment. Technology/gaming/social media addictions, reckless and deceptive on-line behavior and pornography/cyber-sex addiction are among the issues that are treated in the program.
Youth face new addictions fueled by a dependency on technology
Misuse of technology and a "hyper-sexualized" culture lead increasing numbers of teens to become entangled in a variety of dangerous and addictive behaviors that require professional help to overcome.
Based in beautiful St. George, Utah the program provides teens and young adults with a high impact, life-changing therapeutic wilderness experience in the heart of the majestic red rock of the high desert of Southern Utah. STAR Guides is the ideal intervention for teens needing to learn to manage problematic behaviors that they have been unable to manage previously.

Why Specialized Treatment?
STAR Guides provides a clinically intensive therapeutic experience for treating process addictions and stagnated emotional development that simply can't be obtained in outpatient or residential programs. Disruption of these problems often requires a powerful intervention that is unable to occur in an outpatient setting. Wilderness therapy has a capacity for creating change unlike any other treatment option available. Students are engaged with their therapist in individual sessions twice weekly and participate in daily group therapy sessions. The program has been designed so that every task has a therapeutic purpose which is used for assessing and interpreting student behavior.
The STAR Guides experience involves both the youth and the parents
While the youth spends approximately 60 days on the trail and sleeping under the stars in a remote wilderness location, the parents work closely with the STAR Guides therapist in the development of a comprehensive assessment and plan for what type of on-going treatment will be needed in the future.
The parent component at STAR Guides is viewed as just as vital as the wilderness experience for the youth. Parents are educated in the trademark Developmental Vacation theory and come to understand their role in the disruption of the dependencies that have contributed to the problem behaviors. Parents participate in weekly parent phone therapy sessions with their child's therapist and complete a series of therapeutic assignments under the direction of the therapist. Parents also travel to Utah and participate in a two-day family expedition in the wilderness together with their child at the conclusion of the program.
Youth leave with a refined identity and a strong feeling of accomplishment as well as a comprehensive assessment and plan for effective management of problem behaviors for the future.
