Specialized Wilderness Therapy for Sexual and Digital Addictions

Life-Changing Treatment for Teens

The first of its kind nationally, STAR Guides offers wilderness therapy uniquely designed for adolescent boys and girls struggling with sexual behavior issues.

STAR Guides provides navigation for families faced with the challenge of dealing with disruptive sexual behaviors.  Sexual compulsivity, pornography, cyber-sex addiction and sexual offending are among the issues that are treated in the program.

Youth face new addictions fueled by a dependency on technology

Misuse of technology and a "hyper-sexualized" culture lead increasing numbers of teens to become entangled in a variety of dangerous sexual behaviors that require professional help to overcome.

Based in beautiful St. George, Utah the program provides teens and young adults with a high impact, life-changing  therapeutic wilderness experience in the heart of the majestic red rock of the high desert of Southern Utah.  STAR Guides is the ideal intervention for individuals needing to learn to manage problematic sexual behaviors that they have been unable to manage previously.

Finding treatment options for teens that is sexual-specific can be a challenge

STAR Guides provides a clinically intensive therapeutic experience for sexual behavior problems that simply can't be obtained in outpatient or residential programs.   Disruption of sexual behavior problems often requires a powerful intervention that is unable to occur in an outpatient setting.  Wilderness therapy has a capacity for creating change unlike any other treatment option available.  Students are engaged with their therapist in individual sessions twice weekly and participate in daily group therapy sessions.  The program has been designed so that every task has a therapeutic purpose which is used for assessing and interpreting student behavior.

The STAR Guides experience involves both the youth and the parents

Program for Teen Sexual Problems

While the youth spends approximately 60 days on the trail and sleeping under the stars in a remote wilderness location, the parents work closely with the STAR Guides therapist in the development of a comprehensive assessment and plan for what type of on-going treatment will be needed in the future.

The  parent component at STAR Guides is viewed as just as vital as the wilderness experience for the youth.  Parents are educated in the trademark Developmental Vacation theory and come to understand their role in the disruption of the dependencies that have contributed to the sexual behavior problems.  Parents participate in weekly parent phone therapy sessions with their child's therapist and complete a series of therapeutic assignments under the direction of the therapist.  Parents also travel to Utah and participate in a two-day family expedition in the wilderness together with their child at the conclusion of the program.

Youth leave with a refined identity and a strong feeling of accomplishment as well as a comprehensive assessment and plan for effective management of sexual behaviors for the future.

From Parents

STAR Guides was a life saver for our family. Our son was suffering from depression, hopelessness and self-hatred because of his continued failures to break his addictions. We didn’t know how to help him and were so worried. We are so grateful for his wilderness experience and the amazing growth and progress he made. We are blessed to have had the opportunity to work with the team—Doc Dan, Matt, Kena and the wonderful field instructors!

We were devastated upon discovering the pattern of our son’s reckless on-line behavior. We felt powerless as he began to withdraw from everything important in life. Anything we did simply made matters worse including outpatient counseling, changing schools and attempting to keep him off the internet. Finding STAR Guides was an answer to prayers as we have our son back! His time in the wilderness truly resulted in his re-discovering his potential in life and he is happy again.
