Counseling For Teen Fetishes

Help for Teen Fetishes

Fetishes in teens typically come to light either as a result of legal problems or relationship problems.  For example, a teen boy with a fetish for female panties may encounter legal problems as a result of breaking and entering and stealing underwear from a neighbor’s home.    A younger brother who begins to take and stash his older sister’s bras animgd panties may experience family conflict and disruption as a result of his behaviors.

Sexual fetishism is the sexual arousal a person receives from a physical object or from a specific situation. The object or situation of interest is called the fetish and the person who has a fetish for that object or situation is a fetishist.   A sexual fetish is classified as a mental health/sexual disorder if it causes significant psychosocial distress for the person or has detrimental effects on important areas of their life.

Increasingly, many people embrace their fetish rather than attempting treatment to rid themselves of it, especially in an age where they can easily find communities of like-minded people via the internet

The diagnostic criteria for fetishism are as follows:

Unusual sexual fantasies, drives or behavior occur over a time span of at least six months. Sometimes unusual sexual fantasies occur and vanish by themselves; in this case any medical treatment is not necessary.

STAR Guides Wilderness - Counseling For Teen Fetishes

The affected person, their object or another person experience impairment or distress in multiple functional areas. Functional area refers to different aspects of life such as private social contacts, job, etc. It is sufficient for the diagnosis if one of the participants is being hurt or mistreated in any other way.

We most commonly work with teens struggling with fetishes when the behaviors at home become disruptive to family life and an out of home placement is needed to allow the teen and the family time to work on resolving the issues.

Often, fetish behaviors are observed with teens who have been diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome or teens on the Autism spectrum. In these cases, treatment is helpful to assist the teen in learning to manage the compulsive aspects of the fetish that may lead to relationship and legal problems.
